Dustin Cone shot a sparkling, final-round 64 to win the Mizuno Open at Triggs Memorial Golf Course by three strokes over Steve Sokol on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old Purdue graduate from Bennington birdied the first hole and never looked back, firing six more birdies and an eagle on the day.

The eagle came off a 300-yard drive to 4-feet on the par-4 eighth. Jim Renner, of Plainville, Mass., and winner of three professional events already this summer, proved a worthy adversary, however.

While Cone struck first with a birdie, Renner battled back with a three on the par-4 fifth and they matched birds on six. Game on. But

Renner stumbled with a 3- putt bogey on 7 while Cone birdied by stuffing a 5-iron to four feet on the 190-yard par-3.

Renner fans, however, saw a chink in Cone's armor - the only one all day - when he fluffed a chip and missed the par putt. With Renner two down, the two matched cards through 14, including birdies at 11 and 13.
