Why isn't Alex Rodriguez a marketing and endorsement gold mine?
He certainly should be. The young, handsome New York Yankee is arguably the greatest baseball player of all time, and he plays in the top entertainment and sports mecca in the world.
While athletes like Tiger Woods, LeBron James and Kobe Bryant rake in tens of millions of dollars in endorsements, A-Rod gets by on a relatively paltry $6.5 million through his deals with Rawlings, Nike and Topps.
For baseball players, reaching the level that transcends the sport is a tough climb. The biggest endorsement earners tend to be icons in popular individual sports like golf and tennis, which carry broad appeal to legions of casual players.
Then there's the NBA, a league that's been marketed by Commissioner David Stern as a showcase for the individual brilliance of Bryant, James, and Michael Jordan, among others.
