The chill in the economy is not affecting The Beached Whale. At least not this week.

The Fort Myers Beach restaurant can thank out-of-town adult baseball players for that.

“We’re getting 15 to 30 players every night, sometimes more,” Beached Whale manager Wade Craft said. “Half of them come in with their uniforms. They love our chicken wings.”

The Beached Whale isn’t the only local business benefiting from the 20th annual Roy Hobbs World Series. With its 178 teams and 2,850 players, the four-week Fort Myers-based baseball tournament is expected to generate $10 million to the local economy, according to the Lee County Sports Authority.

“I’m not sure the total economic impact (figure) tells the whole story because this comes at the time of the year when we desperately need it,” said Jeff Mielke, the Lee County Sports Authority director.

Not only is the national economy in a funk, but November isn’t a big tourism month for Lee County.
